Roland’s Melody Flip plug-in generates melody and backing ideas

Roland released Melody Flip, a plug-in that works inside music production software. It generates melody, chord, bass and drum ideas from approximately 250 musical Palettes and can also start from an imported audio file. Its short loops can be exported as audio or MIDI for further editing. The plug-in is included with all Roland Cloud membership levels, including the free tier.

Short loops from approximately 250 Palettes

Roland’s Melody Flip plug-in generates melody, chord, bass or drum ideas inside music production software. It offers approximately 250 Palettes of musical ideas organised by genre. Outputs take the form of short loops for further work; the software does not generate fully arranged songs with vocals. Users can choose the genre, note density, tempo and key. They cannot request a song by describing it in a text prompt.[1], [2]

Imported audio can provide a starting point

Users can browse the Palettes directly or start by importing an audio file. Melody Flip analyses the imported track’s structure, tempo, beat positions, key, chord progression, genre and mood. The software then recommends Palettes matching those characteristics. Roland says the tool does not copy the imported song’s melody but uses the analysis to suggest new ideas. The audio-analysis feature draws on the collaboration with Sony Computer Science Laboratories.[2]

Export as MIDI or audio

Generated melodies and backing parts can be exported as audio or MIDI files for continued editing and arrangement. MIDI lets the notes be played using other instrument sounds in music software; most presets use general MIDI tones. The plug-in runs on macOS and Windows. Melody Flip is included with every Roland Cloud membership level, including the free tier.[1], [2]
