The appointment carries two board roles
OpenAI has appointed Paul Christiano to the OpenAI Foundation board. He will also join the Foundation board's Safety and Security Committee, working with its chair, Zico Kolter. At the same time, Christiano will sit as a non-voting observer on the OpenAI Group PBC board. OpenAI says the committee oversees safety and security practices across the organisation, including the for-profit company. Axios independently reports the appointment and the committee's governance role over company safety practices.[1], [2]
Government standards and alignment research enter the boardroom
Christiano works as a senior technology adviser at the Center for AI Standards and Innovation within the US Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is required to recuse himself from OpenAI-related matters and model evaluations there. At the centre's predecessor, the US AI Safety Institute, he worked on evaluating frontier-model capabilities with national-security implications. He also founded the Alignment Research Center, a research organisation focused on keeping advanced AI systems aligned with human interests.[1], [2]
A former alignment research lead returns in governance
Christiano led alignment research at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021 and contributed to foundational work on reinforcement learning from human feedback. Following the 2025 recapitalisation, the Foundation controls OpenAI Group PBC and holds a significant equity stake in the company. The Safety and Security Committee sits within that Foundation board. The appointment places Christiano's technical safety background directly inside the governance oversight of how the company develops and deploys models.[1], [2]
