Altman and Amodei ask the Security Council for shared AI safety standards

OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Anthropic chief Dario Amodei used a UN Security Council session in New York to ask governments for shared safety standards while AI speeds up. Altman said the moment needs extreme care and could look like a creative period or an industrial shock. The Associated Press put the same warning in the chamber: the heads of AI firms told the Council the technology could be a risk to all humanity. Neither account is a treaty text.

Two chiefs take the warning into the Council chamber

OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Anthropic chief Dario Amodei asked the UN Security Council on 23 September for international cooperation on AI safety standards. ABC News places the remarks in a Council session in New York during the 81st General Assembly. Altman said the moment calls for extreme care. The Associated Press reported the same setting from the other side of the table: the heads of AI firms told the Council that the technology could be a risk to all humanity. The two accounts meet on the actor, the room and the ask. They do not meet on a drafted resolution.[1], [2]

Altman offered two pictures of the same acceleration

ABC News reports that Altman said AI can resemble a period of creativity and discovery, or an industrial shift of upheaval and disarray. Both executives pressed global cooperation on safety standards while the technology accelerates. The report carries that as a call in the chamber, not as a treaty text. The AP headline does not add a vote, a draft article or a deadline. It adds the scale the company leaders themselves put on the risk: all humanity, said in front of the Council rather than in a product note.[1], [2]

The Council heard a request, not a finished rule

The antecedent is the General Assembly week itself. ABC News ties the session to the 81st Assembly, so the chiefs spoke while heads of government were already in New York, not at a side conference convened by the companies. What changed on 23 September is who heard the request. Safety standards had been a line in company statements. Here the same two executives put that line in the Security Council, and the AP's account is that the risk they named reaches everyone. No enforcement step is in either report. Altman left both pictures standing: a creative period, or an industrial shock of upheaval. Amodei stood with him on the ask for cooperation and did not, in ABC's account, add a separate draft. A reader can treat the day as a public ask for shared rules, and can also see that the Council did not answer it in these stories.[1], [2]
