Crusoe cancels Boom’s launch order for data-center turbines

Crusoe and Boom Supersonic have ended a partnership for 29 natural-gas turbines intended for AI data centers. The roughly $1.25 billion order was Boom’s launch customer agreement for Superpower, with deliveries once expected to begin in 2027. Crusoe has not ruled out other turbine suppliers. Boom still has delivery targets for other sites but has not named those customers.

Boom loses its launch turbine customer

Crusoe and Boom Supersonic have ended their launch partnership for Superpower natural-gas turbines intended to supply AI data centers. Crusoe had agreed to buy 29 units under a roughly 1.25 billion dollar plan, with first deliveries once expected in 2027. Boom’s chief executive Blake Scholl disclosed the change on 25 September, and Crusoe confirmed that the two companies are no longer doing business together.[1], [2]

The cancelled order had a second purpose

Boom had positioned the stationary turbine business alongside its planned Overture passenger aircraft. Superpower shares technology with the Symphony jet engine that Boom is developing for that plane, and turbine sales were intended to help finance the aviation programme. Crusoe was the first named buyer. The cancellation therefore removes the initial order from a business Boom had presented as a bridge between data-center power and aircraft development.[1], [2]

Other gas turbines remain in Crusoe’s plan

Crusoe says the decision does not rule out turbines at its other sites. Its first large Abilene, Texas, data center mainly uses grid electricity and has gas generation for backup, while a separate site planned for Microsoft is expected to use on-site turbines. Boom says it still aims to deliver about 250 megawatts of Superpower units elsewhere next year and is targeting one gigawatt in 2028. Those delivery figures remain the company’s plans, with customers unnamed.[1], [2]
