Some Gemini shoppers in India see a Flipkart Buy button

Some shoppers in India now see a Buy button on selected Flipkart products inside Gemini and AI Mode. It opens a Flipkart-branded checkout without leaving the AI interface, but the test covers only some users and products. The trial moves Google’s shopping assistant from finding products toward completing purchases, while a broader October release remains a plan reported by one person familiar with the test.

A Buy button appears on Flipkart products

Google is testing a Buy button on some Flipkart products inside Gemini and AI Mode in India. In the experience TechCrunch saw, and according to people familiar with the test, the button opens a Flipkart-branded checkout without taking the shopper out of the AI interface. That goes beyond suggesting a product or showing a link to a retailer. For now, only some users see it, and the selection is small: phones, electronics and mobile accessories are among the products. For people outside the trial, the Flipkart results continue to appear as ordinary listings with no direct purchase control.[1]

Checkout opens under Flipkart’s brand

Google had described a checkout hosted by itself for eligible Gemini and AI Mode products when it announced its Universal Commerce Protocol earlier in the year. A later change let shoppers move items to a retailer’s site for payment. In the observed Flipkart trial, Buy opens the retailer’s own branded checkout; the technology carrying this particular trial has not been disclosed. Amazon listings appeared in the same experience, but had no Buy button. The observed difference shows that the test has not reached every retailer or shopper.[1]

An October expansion remains unannounced

One person familiar with the plan said Google aims to broaden the test in October, ahead of India’s seasonal shopping surge. Google’s spokesperson described routine experiments designed to connect shoppers with businesses, without offering particulars about this trial. Flipkart did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier this month Google had named Flipkart among its partners for AI-assisted shopping in India without giving the Buy button’s scope or timing. The observed limited trial is the present development; a wider October release remains a plan.[1]
