Seoul police disclose thousands of files in an officer’s deepfake case

Seoul police disclosed findings on October 4 in an investigation of an officer accused of making and sharing sexually explicit synthetic images. His arrest on September 16 preceded the announcement. Police examination of seized devices uncovered about 5,600 files, far beyond the three images initially cited in the search warrant. The allegations include manipulated images of acquaintances; they remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.

The disclosure follows an earlier arrest

The newly disclosed findings concern a serving officer at Seoul’s Dongdaemun Police Station. The Korea Times and Seoul Economic Daily report that he is accused of producing and circulating sexually explicit synthetic images, including images of people he knew. Police accounts published on October 4 describe the investigation and material recovered from his devices. The Korea Times dates his arrest to September 16. The arrest therefore belongs to the case’s earlier chronology; the current development is the public disclosure of the allegations and the examination’s findings.[1], [2]

The difference between the initial allegation and the device examination is substantial. According to The Korea Times, the search warrant initially referred to the alleged distribution of three deepfake images. Police seized the officer’s phone and other belongings in August. The subsequent forensic examination uncovered about 5,600 image and video files. Those findings widened the material described in the investigation beyond the small number of images cited when police sought the search.[1]

Undercover investigators identified the officer

The investigation began with a Telegram chat room where synthetic sexual material was allegedly being shared. The Korea Times says the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency secured court permission in December 2025 for an undercover inquiry. An investigator entered the room using a concealed identity and followed its activity for several months before identifying a suspected distributor. Police then established that the suspect served in Dongdaemun’s traffic division. The reported route to his identification was the chat-room investigation, followed by examination of seized belongings.[1]

The allegations extend beyond possession

The Korea Times reports police allegations that the officer used AI applications between March 2022 and July 2026 to make more than 400 explicit manipulated images of acquaintances. He is also accused of secretly filming women and distributing dozens of synthetic images through Telegram groups between August 2025 and April 2026. The recovered collection reportedly included around 2,600 deepfakes, 1,600 items of child and adolescent sexual abuse material and 1,300 illegally filmed videos. These rounded category counts should not be read as an exact accounting of every recovered file. The allegations concern possession, production and distribution; the reports do not establish a final judicial finding of guilt.[1]
