Meta AI gives parents in Japan a view of teenagers’ question topics

Meta has expanded its AI parental controls worldwide, including Japan, allowing parents to see the topics teenagers asked about during the previous seven days. Full conversations remain private. A more restricted content setting can also narrow the available conversations. The October update extends access to controls introduced earlier this year, without providing an independent measure of their safety effects.

Parents can view question topics from the previous seven days

Meta has expanded parental controls for its AI app worldwide, including Japan. When parents enable the feature, they can view the topics teenagers asked Meta AI about over the previous seven days. They cannot read the actual conversations. The newly available setting therefore provides a view of subjects raised with the assistant, while the full exchanges remain hidden from parents.[1]

A more restricted setting narrows available conversations

Parents can also choose a more restricted content option instead of the default age-13-plus setting. This limits the kinds of conversations teenagers can have in the Meta AI app. Both the content setting and parental controls are managed through the app or Family Center, Meta’s interface for supervising teenagers’ accounts.[1]

The October update extends access to earlier controls

AI Watch’s single report, published October 6, covers the worldwide expansion, announced by Meta. Meta’s Japanese announcement had originally appeared in April and now contains an explicitly dated October update. The change is the availability of these controls in Japan and worldwide. No independent measurement of their effect on harm reduction accompanies the expansion. The rollout date is October 5 in US time, while the Japanese update is dated October 6.[1]
