US adults find AI’s pace too fast in new AP-NORC poll

A new AP-NORC survey finds that 64 per cent of US adults think artificial intelligence is developing too quickly. Worker protection and human control attract broad support across party lines, while trust in either party’s handling of AI remains limited. Interviews took place in September; the newly published results measure public attitudes rather than model safety.

Concern over speed spans both main parties

A survey published on 8 October by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, a US public-affairs polling center, finds that 64 per cent of US adults think AI is developing too quickly. 8 per cent think it is moving too slowly, while roughly a quarter consider the pace about right. The share calling it too fast is 76 per cent among Democrats and 54 per cent among Republicans.[1], [2]

Worker protection draws broad support

About eight in ten adults want the federal government to prioritize protecting workers and keeping AI under human control. Both parties’ supporters attach importance to those goals and technological innovation. Differences are greater over environmental harm and competition with other countries. Only 31 per cent approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of AI. 39 per cent trust neither major party on the issue, compared with 23 per cent favoring Democrats and 21 per cent favoring Republicans.[1]

September interviews capture public attitudes

The survey used NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak panel and interviewed 2,140 adults online and by telephone between 24 and 28 September. 21 per cent have used or plan to use AI to learn about a candidate or ballot issue. 12 per cent give that answer for learning how to vote. The findings concern public attitudes and reported intentions; the interviews preceded their October publication.[1]
