OpenAI and Meta apply for the .agent internet suffix

ICANN published the applications for its next expansion of internet domain suffixes, revealing requests from OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic. OpenAI and Meta both sought .agent, while other applications use company and product names. Publication opens the next stage of the application process; competing requests, replacement choices and later objections remain to be resolved before any new suffix becomes available.

AI companies ask for generic and branded suffixes

OpenAI and Meta applied for the .agent internet suffix in the new domain round whose applications ICANN disclosed on October 7. ICANN is the nonprofit organization coordinating internet domain names. A top-level domain is the ending after the last dot in an address. The applications include generic words as well as suffixes tied to companies’ own brands.[1], [2]

OpenAI also sought .agi and .asi, alongside .chatgpt, .codex and .openai. Meta’s branded requests include .facebook, .instagram and .threads; Anthropic asked for .anthropic and .claude. The disclosed list consists of applications awaiting evaluation.[1]

Applicants have a short period to choose replacement names

The submission window ran from April 30 to August 12. Applicants that previously supplied an eligible alternative can choose to replace their primary string during October 8–21. A replacement cannot be identical to another primary or replacement string. The final string list is scheduled for November 17, after those choices are made.[1]

Comments and objections precede further evaluation

The published timetable sets a community comment and objection period from November 17 to March 16, 2027. ICANN expects a prioritization draw after string evaluation in the first half of 2027, with its precise date undecided. Approval and availability follow later stages; applying for .agi itself establishes no technical achievement in artificial general intelligence.[1]
