Meta blames automation for suspending the No Kings Instagram account

Meta says automated enforcement mistakenly suspended the Instagram account used by organisers of the US No Kings demonstrations. The page returned to public view, but organisers reported a longer interruption to administrative access. That left the people running the account unable to use a major communications channel normally during a day of nationwide protests.

Automation stopped a protest account

Meta said an automated enforcement error suspended the Instagram account of No Kings, the movement organising US demonstrations. Spokesperson Andy Stone attributed the mistake to a high volume of posts, shares and comments. He said the account had been restored and that the company was working with organisers. Meta apologised for the interruption.[1], [2]

Public visibility returned before normal control

The public page became visible after roughly an hour and a half, according to Newsweek. Organisers said administrative access remained interrupted, preventing normal operation for about four hours. Ezra Levin, one of the organisers, distinguished the page outsiders could see from the controls needed to run it. Organisers still described a backend access problem during the correspondence even as Meta said the account was restored.[1]

The interruption coincided with nationwide events

The disruption occurred on 17 October, when roughly 3,000 No Kings events were taking place across the country. Organisers were using Instagram to reach participants and distribute images and developments. Meta has not identified the specific model, enforcement rule or activity threshold behind the suspension. Its explanation attributes the decision to automation; the published account does not establish deliberate political targeting.[1]
