Open WebUI loads selected skills only when needed

Open WebUI’s new release lets administrators load selected skill instructions when needed instead of sending them with every message. The option starts disabled and requires the built-in skill tool; a skill named in a message loads immediately. Conversations now show where older messages were summarised and let users open the summary. Disabling integrations also stops saved tool connections from participating in chats.

Instructions wait until needed

Open WebUI, an interface for chatting with AI models, adds optional on-demand loading of selected skills in version 0.12.4. Its release notes describe a setting in the administrator’s general settings: selected skill instructions stop accompanying every message and become available for the model to load through the built-in Skills tool.[1]

The option starts disabled and depends on that tool being enabled. Explicitly mentioning a skill in a message loads it immediately. Selecting skills and naming one in conversation therefore follow different loading paths: the first makes instructions available on demand; the second supplies the requested instructions directly.[1]

Compacted context becomes visible

The same release marks where older conversation messages have been compacted into a summary. Opening the marker reveals that summary; when compaction happens between tool calls, the marker appears inside the reply. Progress and errors also appear in the chat. Temporary conversations and short conversations already above the threshold receive compaction support too.[1]

Disabled connections stop participating

The Direct Integrations setting now governs saved connections as well as their settings page. Turning it off stops previously saved external-tool and OpenTerminal connections from being used in chats. Earlier behaviour only hid their configuration. That control is separate from lazy skill loading: one determines which connections can run, while the other determines when skill instructions enter the conversation.[1]
