itch.io brings generative AI disclosures into search filtering

Independent game store itch.io is extending disclosure-based generative AI filtering to its search results while removing automatically generated spam. Disclosure requirements also reach more categories, including tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks. Creators must identify their use of these tools, and customers can use those declarations to narrow what appears when they search.

Search follows creator disclosures

Independent game marketplace itch.io is extending its generative artificial intelligence disclosure filter to search results. Customers can exclude entries whose creators disclose use of these tools when looking for games and other materials. The change accompanies moderation against automatically generated spam: the store says it has removed several terabytes of such material. Filtering applies to the disclosures attached to product pages.[1], [2]

More categories require disclosure

Disclosure requirements that already covered games and game assets now also apply to tabletop games, soundtracks, books and comics. Creators must complete the disclosure when making a page or editing an existing one. Kotaku reports that creators must describe how they used generative tools even when they later edited out the generated elements. The search option draws on those declarations.[1]

Existing spam rules

The store’s rules already prohibit excessive automated uploads and automatically multiplied entries. GamesRadar+ describes examples including repeated versions of essentially the same material and algorithmic content with little human curation.[2]

Kotaku reports that itch.io also removed near-identical bulk uploads from its search index. The company attributed the broader rise in new game pages to first-time uploaders rather than to those bulk accounts.[1]
