Netflix tests a new way to choose what to watch

Netflix is testing AI Discover, a television-app tab that builds recommendations around how members want to spend their viewing time. Members use themes to progressively narrow selections, while controls let viewers keep or reject individual suggestions. The experiment begins with a small group of English-speaking members in the United States.

Themes guide the search

Netflix, the streaming service, announced AI Discover on November 3 as an experimental tab in its television app. The feature starts from themes reflecting what someone wants to watch, rather than requiring a particular film or series title. Netflix is beginning with a small group of US members using the service in English on supported televisions.[1], [2]

Clips offer narrower choices

Themes can reflect mood, a family viewing session or the time available. Short clips preview the choices. Selecting a theme produces matching titles, followed by more specific themes to narrow the selection. Another option generates a different group when members want to change direction. Recent releases, popular programmes and recent viewing can also shape the themes.[1]

Viewers can reject individual suggestions

A control beside each title lets members retain a recommendation or ask not to see it again within AI Discover. Netflix says AI helps create the themes and that the experience will give reasons for its recommendations. Usage and member feedback will shape which approaches are refined or retained, and which may eventually become part of the main Netflix experience.[1]
