The scope of US-mediated Lebanon talks and West Bank violence

Lebanon and the US report progress on a defined negotiating agenda. A separate Al Jazeera report documents West Bank injuries, setting a clear boundary on how far that progress can be read.

Three layers of agent control cannot substitute for one another

Three reports show that identifying behaviour, constraining an agent’s environment, and seeking human approval can each fall short when used alone to control autonomous systems.

Three paths for biological machinery: persist, release, transfer

Three new studies separate different fates of biological machinery: a system can retain function after disuse, a vitamin can reach nearby cells after lysis, and a gene can travel between fungal species.

Two cases set distinct security coordination in motion

An explosive-laden drone found at Leipzig/Halle led to a federal investigation and a German National Security Council meeting. A western Mediterranean smuggling-network investigation instead culminated in a multi-country law-enforcement operation with 78 arrests.

Two institutional paths for presidential authority

In Lisa Cook's case, the Supreme Court's rule limits removal of a Fed governor to cause. A separate Senate bill would give the president tariff authority of up to 100 percent on buyers of Russian energy, subject to House passage.

A drought reaches the grid through the condenser

With only one of its eight turbines running, the Paks plant is the most visible consequence of the falling Danube; in Romania a rock was blasted in the river for Cernavodă, and Slovenia and France have taken reactors off. The chain from a falling river to a constrained evening runs through cooling water, and the evening is exactly where solar cannot reach.

ADNOC counted the attacks in its own statement

This time the cost in Hormuz has been counted in the carrier's own statement. ADNOC said 15 of its vessels had been targeted, three of them this week, that one crew member was killed and that 20 people were injured. The demand that stands out in the statement is protection of passage.

De la Espriella begins with a list of missions to close

Abelardo de la Espriella took office in Cali on Friday. NPR reports that the foreign-policy leg of his programme is built on subtraction: 14 embassies are to close and talks with armed groups are to end. That is a long list for an election won by about 1 percentage point.

Households are holding up both their unemployment expectation and their spending expectation

The mean probability that unemployment will be higher within a year rose to 42.8 per cent in the New York Fed's July survey, while the same households' expected spending growth held at 4.9 per cent. Both are beliefs; turning that spending into demand requires income or credit.

Italy suspended Schengen, Spain has not named its counter-measure

Rome partially suspended its Schengen arrangement with Spain and said the checks would run until at least 15 August. Madrid demanded a reversal by 9 August, announced proportionate measures, and did not say what those measures are. The instruments in the two capitals' hands differ in how concrete they are.
