China's short dramas are 95 per cent AI as compositional video guards fail

About 128,000 AI short dramas were published in China in the first quarter of 2026, triple 2025's full-year total, at 90 to 120 dollars a minute versus roughly ten times that for actors. An arXiv preprint the same week reports 11,024 compositional attacks where harmless inputs combine into harmful video. Current multimodal guards miss them systematically while the industry directly employs 690,000 people.

Claude researches its own alignment fixes as Co-Scientist takes experiments into the lab

In research published on 28 August, Anthropic said Claude searched for methods across ten alignment failure categories, trained the model and on deception outscored six safety researchers' best proposals. Google DeepMind extended Co-Scientist into a closed-loop pipeline from hypothesis through lab equipment to manuscript drafts. Anthropic is automating alignment research while Google DeepMind expanded Co-Scientist into an experimental pipeline.

Dressed-up market data pushed agents into calls they could not support

In a preprint published on arXiv on 29 August, 12 frontier models were shown professional-looking market data on questions no data could settle; as the evidence looked stronger, commitment rose from 6.5 percent to 54.0 percent of runs. Fabricated numbers produced a 36.8 percent commitment rate against 37.6 percent for genuine data. Anthropic's automated alignment research announced on 28 August also outscored human proposals on deception.

Eplontersen lowered the amyloid protein and still missed its endpoint in heart amyloidosis

The largest transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy trial reported to date, CARDIO-TTRansform, gave eplontersen or placebo to 1,432 people. The drug suppressed circulating transthyretin, yet the trial counted 381 cardiovascular events on the drug against 392 on placebo and missed its primary composite goal. A nominally significant benefit appeared only among people not already on background stabiliser therapy.

Extra cargoes through Hormuz push oil to a 5.5 per cent weekly loss

Brent settled 52 cents lower on Friday at 89.18 dollars a barrel and WTI fell 1.01 dollars to 82.52 dollars. Over the week Brent lost 5.5 per cent and WTI 5.2 per cent. What surprised the market was extra crude moving through the Strait of Hormuz on an Iran-Oman corridor together with volume opened by US mine clearance work. CFTC data showed money managers lifting gasoline futures longs against the weekly crude decline.

FinCEN moves to cut Banque Misr's UAE branches off dollars as the justice department corrects its hacking release

FinCEN issued a proposed rule finding the five United Arab Emirates branches of Banque Misr to be of primary money laundering concern, citing 103 potential Iranian shadow-banking front companies that moved approximately 1.8 billion dollars between January 2024 and June 2026. The US Department of Justice published a corrected release saying the Chinese state-sponsored QTFY hacking group targeted the Senate, the Federal Reserve and NASA, after an earlier version described the same bodies as victims.
