Thinking time costs tasks on real robots as Xpeng raises $900 million for embodied AI
An arXiv preprint on 29 August shows zero-shot object-navigation methods degrade once wall-clock time counts, while RTNav raises success by up to 11 points in simulated real-time benchmarks. TechCrunch on 28 August reported Xpeng's robotics unit closed more than $900 million at a $6.3 billion valuation, the largest single private embodied-AI financing round it describes in China.
Trump called Jensen Huang mid-meeting as Lambda borrowed 1 billion dollars for chips
Three sources told WIRED that Donald Trump called Jensen Huang on his mobile phone midway through Nvidia's all-hands meeting on Thursday morning; staff could hear Trump's voice because the stage microphone stayed live. In the same period AI cloud provider Lambda raised 1 billion dollars in short-dated private debt arranged by JP Morgan Chase to buy the Nvidia chips it leases to Microsoft.
Twenty-six authors claim frontier-level gains on a continually trained open model as Claude searches its own alignment
The Thomson preprint published on arXiv on 29 August reports a continual-learning stack on open-weight models approaching today's frontier systems on agentic tasks. Anthropic's 28 August research says Claude searched 10 alignment failure categories on its own; on deception it reports a result 20 percent better than the best human proposal. THE DECODER writes Google DeepMind extended Co-Scientist into a closed loop that drives lab equipment. Three developments in the same week advance models' own research and improvement loops.
Two-year Treasury yield jumps 14 basis points and the curve flattens
The US Treasury's daily yield curve for 28 August showed the two-year yield rising from 4.20 per cent to 4.34 per cent and the ten-year from 4.52 per cent to 4.59 per cent, narrowing the gap between the two maturities from 32 basis points to 25. The move concentrated at the front of the curve. Investors read Fed Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole address as mildly hawkish for the near term, and the S&P 500 fell 0.25 per cent on Friday.
US justice department corrects its China hacking release as FinCEN moves on Banque Misr
The US Department of Justice edited a statement to say the Chinese state-sponsored group QTFY targeted the Senate, the Federal Reserve, NASA and other bodies, after an earlier release had suggested the agencies had been attacked. FinCEN found the five UAE branches of Banque Misr to be of primary money-laundering concern and proposed cutting them off from dollar correspondent accounts.
US takes a 55 per cent Venezuela oil stake as Colombia opens deportations in Barranquilla
Donald Trump announced a deal giving the United States control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's proven reserves and a 55 per cent joint-venture stake, with a 100-year concession cited and no official text released. Colombia's President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered deportations to begin in Barranquilla, home to about 182,000 Venezuelans, starting with people who commit crimes and then those whose status has not been regularised; opposition figures accused the policy of xenophobia.
VFD Group opens 20 billion naira of paper at yields above 21 per cent
VFD Group opened a 20 billion naira commercial paper issue on 28 August under a 50 billion naira programme, with the 270-day tranche offering a 21.50 per cent implied yield. The offer closes on 4 September. In the same week Moody's turned Nigeria's outlook positive, and FTSE Russell's frontier-market reclassification takes effect on 21 September.
Visual Studio Copilot gains a thinking-effort dial as Apple auto-builds agent tests
With GitHub's August update, organisations can publish custom Copilot agents across repositories and have Visual Studio detect them automatically, and developers can set the model's thinking effort to low, medium or high. Apple researchers described Agent Seer, which builds agent test scenarios from Model Context Protocol specifications and reports that parameter schema complexity drives quality more than tool-suite size. Both companies are easing how software agents are built and tested.
West Bank settler attacks head for a record year as Mladenov warns on the Gaza ceasefire
Violence by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank is heading for a record year and spreading into new areas, the BBC reports. Board of Peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov warned the Gaza ceasefire could collapse if the roadmap is not followed. A rare airstrike in Jenin killed three Palestinians. The BBC also reported that the Pentagon-funded Peshmerga aid memorandum ends on 30 September.
WikiSkill keeps a persistent wiki beside agent skills as Apple auto-builds MCP tests
A 29 August arXiv preprint introduces WikiSkill, separating execution traces, accumulated knowledge and executable skills in a persistent wiki that later updates build on. Apple researchers on 28 August described Agent Seer, which generates graded agent tests from Model Context Protocol specifications and covered every tool on 7 MCP specs. Both address how agents retain and verify capability.
