One impact may have carved Deimos's crater and buried its surface in debris
The proposed single-impact scenario for Deimos links the large southern depression and the moon's smooth, dusty surface to the same globally distributed debris blanket. Mars's warm, partly molten southern interior shows that asymmetry in the system also extends below the surface. The cause of that internal difference remains unknown, with ancient giant impacts among the explanations under consideration.

John Ratcliffe's previously unexplained Moscow trip now has a stated purpose: two people familiar with the visit say the CIA director warned Russia against attacking Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. As NATO ambassadors await a Pentagon briefing on a US force-posture review, European officials are also asking whether Washington is consulting allies or using troop deployments as leverage. The warning arrives amid uncertainty over America's own forces in Europe.

Taiwan's coast guard counted a record 244 Chinese government vessels around the island in July and 118 in the first 24 days of August, while Chinese naval and coast guard ships shadowed a five-day multinational exercise near the disputed Sabina Shoal, radioing a Philippine navy vessel to leave the area — a demand Manila rejected.
Record crude exports return Canada to a current-account surplus
Canada's current account swung to an 8.8 billion Canadian-dollar surplus as record crude exports lifted goods trade. Across the border, the US goods deficit widened to 118.8 billion US dollars in July as imports rose and exports fell. Ottawa also removed seafood from a counter-tariff list one day after announcing it, showing trade policy and realised goods flows moving on different clocks.
Rhône glacier ice loss puts the Alps on course for their heaviest melt year
More than 9 m of ice have melted off the Rhône glacier this season, some 30 million tonnes in all, after heatwaves that peaked in June. Field measurements recorded 1.4 m of loss in two weeks, almost 10 cm a day, and nearly four m since mid-June. A collapsed subglacial cave on the lower glacier shows basal melt as well as surface loss.
