Every channel left in the pilots file runs on someone's permission

Iran asks Doha to bring the detained pilots ashore, and asks the International Committee of the Red Cross to fly them home. Qatar does not accept that it is holding anyone, and keeps its invitation open. Since the Islamabad memorandum lapsed, no text binds either party to act within a set period.

In Guyana the Errea Wittu docked on 20 August, and the barrels are still on the calendar

Guyana's output fell for four consecutive months to 869,000 barrels a day in June. The 250,000-barrel-a-day production ship meant to reverse that reached the coast on 20 August, while the startup date stays disputed: the government says September, ExxonMobil guides to the fourth quarter. What separates hardware in the water from barrels in the balance is that calendar.

Junk-bond money is buying the AI buildout's high-grade paper

The rating on a data-centre bond describes the borrower; the yield describes the queue. Follow the yield, and it tells you which rung of the financing ladder this buildout stands on, and whose income sits on the other side of the claim.

Katz's rule takes the explosive out of the trigger

Under the measure Katz set, the name of the object decides the trigger while the payload no longer does. The promised response runs as far as clearing a neighbourhood.

The 33,000 is eight different summers added together

Europe's provisional heat toll is being read as one number, but the eight national figures behind it cover different months and two different definitions. The one quantity measured the same way everywhere is EuroMomo's 32,000 excess deaths between mid-July and mid-August, and that is the one that can be tracked from year to year.

The advantage is carried by one number: a bit-flip probability of 0.1 to 1

TU Wien's design drops a trapped-ion processor into an electron microscope. The load is carried by the calculated chance that one slow electron flips a qubit, and the paper prints the vacuum, timing and geometry that number costs.

The buyback bought two days of lower yields, and gold kept 5 per cent

The Treasury announced buybacks at double the expected size, long-dated yields fell, and the fall was largely given back by Friday. Gold closed the week 5 per cent higher. Read together, the two prices show an official bid working on the supply side of long-dated paper while the inflation and policy side stayed where it was.

The door the mandate never guarded

For decades Stars and Stripes has been printed with Pentagon money and edited without Pentagon approval, an arrangement carried by a mandate from Congress and by the department's own rules. Those texts govern what the paper may print. They say nothing about who holds its posts, and that is where three of its staff left this week.

The extra small stars were counted in nine galaxies; the extra mass was inferred for others

JWST spectra of nine quiescent galaxies hold more low-mass stars than the Milky Way's recipe allows. The 3-4 times heavier masses everyone quoted, though, belong to galaxies that were never in the sample.

The stroke gap was 2.1 points; the death gap was 6.2

Two studies published on the same day draw on the same international database of routine clinical care, and both stop at the word "association". The figure that explains their caution sits in the second row of the results, not the first.
