China warned of "consequences" for Taiwan after officials from Beijing and Taipei attended the opening ceremony of the Pacific Islands Forum leaders' meeting in Palau. Samba, the third Cluster satellite, reentered over the South Pacific at 21:39:38 UTC on 31 August 2026. The European Space Agency and The Watchers report that a Tonga-based aircraft filmed the break-up and that 29 of 30 instruments returned data; the predicted moment held to the second. The Watchers says burns on 19 and 20 January put Samba and Tango on the same campaign, with Tango predicted for 21:30:31 UTC on 1 September.

Debian allows generative AI in contributions after a ban failed
Debian developers voted to allow the responsible use of generative AI in project contributions, rejecting a competing proposal to ban machine-generated code entirely. The winning General Resolution subjects AI code to Debian's ordinary open-source distribution and licensing standards without mandating a specific AI disclosure from contributors.
DoorDash moved engineering agents off laptops into Firecracker sandboxes
DoorDash migrated its engineering AI agents from developer laptops to a cloud-based platform called Flux to overcome local security and power limits. Running in isolated AWS Firecracker microVMs governed by strict YAML playbooks, the centralized agents now handle 130,000 engineering tasks a month and over 25,000 weekly automated code reviews.

Fed governor Michael Barr backs raising rates if inflation does not moderate
At the Second-Chance Lending Forum in Washington, Fed governor Michael Barr said inflation remains too high and has been for over five years. He said that if inflation appears not to be moderating sufficiently, officials should act decisively to raise rates. The address was mainly about credit access; the policy passage stated a condition rather than a decision. American Banker reported that Barr voted with the July majority that held the funds rate at 3.5–3.75 per cent.
GCRMN finds a 9.5 per cent drop in global hard coral cover
GCRMN released a new status report on Monday with the International Coral Reef Initiative. Comparing 2020-24 with 1980-2009, it finds a 9.5 per cent decline in global hard coral cover, and in Australia cover fell from 30.2 per cent to 26.8 per cent. Manuel Gonzalez Rivero says bleaching has roughly doubled in frequency, so reefs no longer get the recovery time they need. Reefs cover under 1 per cent of the ocean floor and support more than 25 per cent of marine life.
