Ester Expósito takes the role of Ana Ozores

Director Mar Coll is working with Ester Expósito on the Netflix film La Regenta. Expósito plays Ana Ozores, the central character in the novel published by Spanish writer Leopoldo Alas under the name Clarín. María Zamora produces through her company Elastica Films, and Coll wrote the screenplay with Anna R. Costa and Diego Vega.[1], [2]

Netflix announced that filming began on 23 October. The cast places Oriol Pla as religious official Fermín de Pas, Vito Sanz as Victor Quintanar and Borja Luna as Álvaro Mesía. Ana Torrent, Clara Ingold, Carlos González, Itsaso Arana and Gonzalo de Castro also take roles in the production.[1]

Private life comes under social scrutiny in Vetusta

La Regenta was first published in 1884–1885 and is set in the provincial city of Vetusta. Ana is a young woman married to former magistrate Victor Quintanar, a man twice her age. Attention from Fermín de Pas and Álvaro Mesía adds to her private crisis. Her story unfolds under constant scrutiny from those around her, amid tensions involving desire, faith and social power.[1]

Coll centres her adaptation on Ana’s loneliness

Coll said her personal approach to the novel focused particularly on Ana’s loneliness and search for meaning. Netflix describes the film as a contemporary interpretation with a female perspective. The director’s earlier work includes Three Days With the Family and Salve María, which received a special mention at the Locarno festival in 2024. Zamora’s producing credits include Alcarràs, Romería, The Rye Horn and Creatura.[1]
