August gain follows an upward July revision

Australian job advertisements increased 2.5 per cent in August compared with the previous month in the series compiled by ANZ Bank and employment search service Indeed. July's increase was revised upwards to 1.9 per cent. Advertisements were 7.8 per cent above a year earlier. The separately calculated trend series rose 1.9 per cent over the month and 7.7 per cent over the year.[1], [2]

Three states post gains

Job advertisements increased in Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland, while New South Wales recorded a slight decline. Retail, food service, education, and cleaning and sanitation supplied the growth across sectors. Christmas-related seasonal hiring had begun in retail and food service, putting those businesses among the sectors expanding their search for staff during August.[1], [2]

Technology hiring demand eases

Technology postings moved lower, with declines in software development and in data and analytics roles. Demand for staff in those fields eased while several service sectors expanded hiring. ANZ senior economist Jasmine Zheng expects job advertisements to trend down gradually in the period ahead. She also expects unemployment to rise, although her forecast is for a modest increase in the unemployment rate.[1]
