The 1.9 headline holds
The Statistics Bureau released August 2026 national CPI on 18 September. All-items 2025=100 was 102.2, up 1.9% year on year, the same annual rate as July. Excluding fresh food the index was 102.0, up 1.7% after 1.8% in July. Excluding fresh food and energy the index was 102.5, up 1.9%. Seasonally adjusted all-items was unchanged on the month.[1], [2]
Energy subtracts from the annual rate
Energy’s year-on-year rate flipped to -0.7% in August from +0.6% in July and subtracted 0.09 percentage points from the change in the all-items annual rate. Electricity was -2.4% year on year. Excluding fresh food, the seasonally adjusted monthly rise was 0.1%; excluding fresh food and energy it was 0.3%. Those official prints are the statistics office’s, not a market guess.[1], [2]
Bloomberg’s one-line market frame
Bloomberg’s 17 September feed said Japan CPI slows before an expected BOJ hike. The live page returned HTTP 403, so that card is the headline and lede only. However the Bureau table already shows why the ex-fresh print cooled: energy flipped sign. The expected hike is Bloomberg’s frame, not a number in the PDF. Readers can hold the 1.9 / 1.7 / -0.7 set without taking the hike as decided.[1], [2]
