US private employers add 90,000 jobs in September

US private employers added 90,000 jobs in September, while ADP revised its August estimate down to 36,000. Education and health services led the gains, but financial activities lost jobs. Base pay rose faster for people changing jobs than for those staying put. The figures show hiring accelerated after a summer slowdown, within ADP’s private-sector measure rather than the full government payroll count.

Private hiring accelerates from August

US private employers added 90,000 jobs in September. ADP lowered its earlier estimate for August from 38,000 to 36,000. The September reading therefore marks an acceleration after a summer slowdown in hiring. The measure is based on private-sector payrolls and excludes government employment. It should not be treated as the full official employment report for the country.[1], [2]

Services lead the job gains

Education and health services accounted for 55,000 of the new jobs, while leisure and hospitality added 22,000. Financial activities shed 16,000 positions and professional and business services lost 11,000. Manufacturing added 17,000 jobs and construction 15,000. Goods-producing industries gained 31,000 positions overall, against 59,000 in services. The mix shows that the overall increase did not extend evenly across the private economy.[1]

Job changers see faster base-pay growth

ADP measured year-on-year base-pay growth of 3.2% across workers. The rate was 3.0% for employees staying with their employer and 4.8% for job changers. By company size, medium establishments added 54,000 workers, small establishments 23,000 and large ones 14,000. ADP builds its employment estimate from anonymized weekly payroll data covering more than 26 million private-sector employees. That is the scope of the measurement; September’s gain does not establish that hiring will continue at the same pace.[1]
