Euro-area producer prices rise 1.9 per cent as energy costs climb

Industrial producer prices in the euro area rose 1.9 per cent in August from July and 8.2 per cent from a year earlier. Energy prices increased 5.6 per cent over the month, while the measure excluding energy rose 0.2 per cent. Eurostat’s first estimate covers domestic industrial selling prices; the European Union also recorded a 1.9 per cent monthly increase.

August’s producer-price rise reaches 1.9 per cent

Industrial producer prices rose 1.9 per cent between July and August 2026 in both the euro area and the European Union. The first estimate released on October 5 follows July increases of 1.6 per cent in the euro area and 1.4 per cent across the EU. The reference period is August, with July providing the monthly comparison.[1], [2]

Compared with August a year earlier, producer prices were 8.2 per cent higher in the euro area and 8 per cent higher in the EU. The series measures industrial selling prices on domestic markets. Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office, publishes the energy component separately from the measure of total industry excluding energy.[1]

Energy rises faster than other industrial groups

Euro-area energy producer prices increased 5.6 per cent over the month. Intermediate goods rose 0.4 per cent, capital goods 0.2 per cent, durable consumer goods 0.4 per cent and non-durable consumer goods 0.1 per cent. Total industry excluding energy recorded a 0.2 per cent increase. Across the EU, the corresponding energy rise was 5.5 per cent and the measure excluding energy also increased 0.2 per cent. EU intermediate goods rose 0.4 per cent and capital goods 0.2 per cent; durable goods rose 0.3 per cent and non-durable goods 0.2 per cent.[1]

Annual energy prices rise 21 per cent in the euro area

The annual euro-area increase in energy prices reached 21 per cent. Intermediate goods rose 6.8 per cent, capital goods 2.6 per cent and durable goods 3.4 per cent, while non-durable goods declined 0.8 per cent. Total industry excluding energy rose 3.4 per cent annually. In the EU, annual energy prices increased 20.7 per cent and the measure excluding energy rose 3.3 per cent.[1]

The EU member states all recorded monthly increases. Bulgaria and Estonia had the largest, at 3.3 per cent, followed by Italy at 3.1 per cent and Denmark at 3 per cent. Annual increases were highest in Ireland at 17.1 per cent, Bulgaria at 16.8 per cent and Lithuania at 14.6 per cent. Luxembourg was the only country with an annual decline, of 7.9 per cent.[1]
