Flipkart reports 6.3 million concurrent users in its festive sale’s first hour

Flipkart reported 6.3 million concurrent users in a minute during the first hour of its festive sale in India. Shopper traffic exceeded six times a regular hour’s level. The company said nearly half its first-hour visits came from Tier three towns and beyond, while non-metropolitan customers accounted for about 60 per cent of demand. The disclosed activity measures do not give a monetary sales total.

Shopper traffic rises in the first hour

Indian e-commerce company Flipkart reported 6.3 million concurrent users in a minute during the first hour of its festive sale, which opened to the general public on 9 October. The company said shopper traffic during that hour exceeded six times a regular hour’s level. The two measures cover different activity: users present concurrently in one minute and shopper traffic across the opening hour.[1], [2]

Flipkart also reported 34 per cent growth in new customers during the opening hour. Sessions during its early access period, which opened to selected membership and card groups on 8 October, exceeded 287 million.[2]

Nearly half of visits come from smaller towns

According to Flipkart, nearly half of first-hour visits came from Tier three towns and beyond. Non-metropolitan customers represented approximately 60 per cent of demand. The geographical distribution of visits and the distribution of demand are separate indicators disclosed by the company for its opening period. It did not disclose annual growth in order numbers.[1]

Beauty and appliance sales increase

The company reported annual first-hour sales growth of 42 per cent for beauty products, 30 per cent for large appliances and 73 per cent for tablets. These rates describe product categories during the same opening hour. Flipkart did not disclose gross merchandise value for the opening days. The activity indicators do not give a monetary sales total.[1]
