September exports rise faster than imports

India’s commerce ministry reported merchandise exports of 44.40 billion dollars for September, up from 36.08 billion dollars a year earlier. Imports increased from 69.08 billion dollars to 74.61 billion dollars. The difference between the published export and import values was 30.21 billion dollars. The Indian Express put annual export growth at about 23 per cent and import growth at 8 per cent. The figures measure trade values in US dollars.[1], [2]

Electronics and engineering goods support exports

Electronic goods exports increased 70.44 per cent year on year to 5.31 billion dollars. Engineering goods exports rose 20.91 per cent to 12.17 billion dollars, while petroleum product exports grew from 4.71 billion dollars to 6.22 billion dollars. Exports excluding petroleum, gems and jewellery increased from 28.53 billion dollars to 34.81 billion dollars. Imports excluding those categories rose from 42.33 billion dollars to 51.64 billion dollars.[1]

Services figures remain estimates

The ministry estimated September services exports at 36.35 billion dollars and services imports at 19.44 billion dollars. Its latest central-bank services data covered August, so the September estimates remained provisional. Combined goods and services exports were estimated at 80.75 billion dollars. For April–September, merchandise exports totalled 259.89 billion dollars and imports 437.53 billion dollars; the six-month goods deficit widened from 156.88 billion dollars to 177.64 billion dollars.[1]
