Perrigo sales weaken as formula sale changes the annual forecast

Perrigo reported lower sales and narrower margins in the third quarter. Its core businesses also contracted as consumption and retailer inventories weakened. An agreement to sell infant formula operations changes the businesses included in the annual forecast. The transaction provides an upfront payment and possible later payments, while the company expects a further impairment charge.

Core sales also contract

Perrigo, a consumer health products group, reported a 5.2 per cent decline in third-quarter sales from continuing operations. Sales for the period ended 26 September fell from 1,043 million dollars to approximately 989 million dollars. Adjusted earnings per share decreased 25 per cent to 0.60 dollars. The company separately identifies core operations, excluding infant formula and previously announced divestitures. Core sales declined 1.7 per cent to 908 million dollars, with an organic contraction of 1.1 per cent. Pricing reduced core sales by 0.4 per cent and volume and product mix by 0.7 per cent.[1], [2]

Retailer caution accompanies weaker margins

Management cited weaker consumption and more cautious retailer inventories ahead of the cough and cold season, alongside lower contract manufacturing volumes. Total gross margin fell from 36.1 per cent to 32.4 per cent, and operating margin narrowed from 7 per cent to 2.3 per cent. The reported diluted result moved from earnings of 0.09 dollars per share to a loss of 0.10 dollars. In core operations, adjusted gross margin was 37.9 per cent and operating margin was 14.3 per cent. Core adjusted earnings per share fell 9 per cent to 0.61 dollars.[1]

Self Care sales were 613 million dollars, Specialty Care sales 182 million dollars and infant formula sales 81 million dollars. All three categories recorded year-on-year declines. Operating cash flow was 96 million dollars, with capital spending of 18 million dollars and dividend payments of 40 million dollars.[1]

Formula exit redraws annual guidance

The infant formula sale agreement provides 40 million dollars upfront and up to 135 million dollars in contingent payments through 2030. Perrigo expects a fourth-quarter impairment charge of 275–375 million dollars. Its revised annual outlook excludes infant formula: adjusted earnings-per-share guidance is 2.25–2.45 dollars, while core guidance is 2.15–2.35 dollars. The earlier forecast covered a different business scope. At quarter-end, the company held 437 million dollars in cash and approximately 3.3 billion dollars of debt.[1]
