Kyiv hit by deadly strikes

A massive overnight bombardment involving 168 drones and 44 missiles struck multiple Ukrainian regions, leaving at least 15 people dead in Kyiv and Donetsk. The Ukrainian air force reported that while 146 drones and 39 cruise missiles were intercepted, the ballistic missiles could not be stopped. Across the Brovary and Boryspil districts of the Kyiv region, 1 person was killed and 7 were wounded, and in Donetsk, another 1 person was killed and 11 were injured. The country declared a day of mourning for Friday.[1]

Interceptor shortage deepens

President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the casualties to a critical shortage of air defence interceptors, specifically noting on Telegram that Patriot supplies had not been replenished. Standing in front of a wrecked apartment block in the Solomianskyi district, Mayor Vitali Klitschko also emphasized the country's urgent need for ammunition and anti-missile systems. The MP Oleksiy Goncharenko said Ukraine remains absolutely unprotected against ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, Russia's defence ministry claimed it targeted military facilities and warehouses, reporting that 726 Ukrainian drones aimed at various regions had been shot down.[1]

NATO jets scrambled in Romania

As the aerial conflict continued, a drone crossed into Romanian airspace east of Galati and crashed northeast of the village of Grindu. The intrusion prompted the scrambling of two Spanish F-18 jets assigned to NATO's air policing mission, followed by an IAR-330 SOCAT reconnaissance helicopter that confirmed the crash site. The resulting fire burned itself out with no casualties or property damage reported, and a military team secured the site. Although Romania has not yet formally identified the drone's origin, a NATO spokesperson said a drone shot down earlier appeared to be Russian. The incident marks at least the fifth time this year that drones have entered Romanian airspace, after Romanian F-16 jets intercepted Russian drones in July and another was shot down in mid-August.[2]
