Distance figures led the Etorofu launch and the Perm strike
Bastion missiles fired from Etorofu at targets about 300km away and a refinery struck in Perm about 1500km from the Ukrainian border put range and depth figures at the centre of the day's file.

The Bastion launch from Etorofu drew a protest from Tokyo
According to The Guardian, Russia's Pacific Fleet said it fired Bastion surface-to-ship missiles from Etorofu, the largest of the four disputed islands, and struck targets about 300 km away. The central consequence in the report was diplomatic as much as technical: Tokyo lodged a protest after the launch. The Kuril Islands file therefore pulled a military demonstration and Japan's sovereignty objection back into the same headline.[1]
The refinery in Perm lay within range of Ukrainian drones
The Kyiv Independent reported that Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed a drone strike overnight on August 21 against the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez refinery in Perm, about 1,500 km from the Ukrainian border. Analysts at the independent Russian Telegram channel ASTRA geolocated footage of smoke rising near the plant. Russia's Defence Ministry, for its part, claimed 325 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight. Here the file turned on the depth and reach of the strike.[2]
In both reports the distance figure defined the scale
The Guardian report says the missiles fired from Etorofu hit targets about 300km away. The Kyiv Independent report says the refinery in Perm lay about 1500km from the Ukrainian border. In both reports, the shared element is that the events are described through those distance figures.[1], [2]
