Forty million barrels of Iranian oil float past the blockade as a second carrier prepares to deploy

Roughly 40 million barrels of Iranian crude sit on tankers near Malaysia beyond the US naval blockade line, even as China's imports of Iranian oil fell to an estimated 534,000 barrels a day from 823,000 in July. The aircraft carrier and its 5,000-strong crew will deploy to the Middle East within weeks for at least seven months, relieving the Abraham Lincoln after more than 250 days at sea.

Iranian oil circumvents the US blockade

Roughly 40 million barrels of Iranian crude are floating on tankers near Malaysia, having moved already past the US naval blockade line. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched "Operation Economic Outcast" on Sunday, promising a "zero-leakage" approach to isolate Iran's remaining oil, shipping and financial networks. Former Treasury official Max Meizlish noted that the current enforcement is not really stopping the flow of oil already past the blockade line.[1]

An aircraft carrier prepares for Middle East deployment

The aircraft carrier and its roughly 5,000-strong crew will embark within weeks for what is expected to be at least a seven-month deployment. This move will relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has spent more than 250 days at sea without a port call in the region. President Donald Trump said that US economic strength would move the country "toward a very big victory" over Iran.[2]

Shifting crude flows and diplomacy

While the US Navy strains to sustain its presence, China's imports of Iranian crude fell to an estimated 534,000 barrels a day this month from about 823,000 in July. Concurrently, Brent crude fell for a third straight day after Iran and Oman announced a framework for a temporary Hormuz shipping route, and Qatar's prime minister prepared to visit Tehran to discuss de-escalation.[1], [2]
