Trump calls the Iran conflict ‘small potatoes’ as accounts detail the exchange

Al Jazeera and AP News separately reported Donald Trump’s remarks about the Iran conflict in a White House exchange. Both accounts describe his defence of JD Vance’s position and his characterization of the fighting; AP also reported that Trump described US strikes as intermittent.

Trump’s characterization of the Iran conflict

Al Jazeera reported that Trump described the Iran campaign as ‘small potatoes’ while discussing a conflict in which 18 US service members had died. The report presented the phrase as part of Trump’s remarks on the conflict and paired it with its report that 18 US service members had died. This card keeps that death toll as Al Jazeera’s reported context, not as an independently recalculated figure.[1]

A second account of the White House exchange

AP News reported the same remarks and said Trump defended JD Vance’s view that the on-and-off fighting was not a war. Its report said Trump characterized US strikes as intermittent. AP’s account placed the defence of Vance’s wording and the description of intermittent strikes in the same exchange. The card attributes those characterizations to Trump as reported by AP, without extending them into a legal conclusion about the conflict.[2]

Two independent reports describe one set of remarks

The two reports concern the same presidential exchange, rather than separate Iran developments: Al Jazeera foregrounded the conflict’s US death toll, while AP detailed Trump’s defence of Vance’s wording and his description of the strikes. The overlap between the reports is useful because it identifies the remarks as one exchange. Their different reported details are retained separately: Al Jazeera supplies the death-toll context, while AP supplies the account of Vance’s position and the description of strikes.[1], [2]
