Iceland summons ambassador Billy Long over Trump's map placing the island under the US flag

Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir called in US ambassador Billy Long, who took up the post last month, after Trump posted a Truth Social map showing Iceland under the American flag. The ministry said the post was completely inappropriate. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen repeated that Greenland does not want to be American.

Gunnarsdottir called Billy Long in over Trump's map

NBC News reported that Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir called in Billy Long, the US ambassador who took up his post last month. Trump had posted an image on Truth Social showing the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean covered by the American flag and labelled United States of America. The foreign ministry said the position was clearly expressed that the post was completely inappropriate. The BBC corroborated the same step, writing that Iceland's Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir called in Long and that she said the post was completely inappropriate.[1], [2]

The post carried no caption, and Washington did not respond at once

NBC reported that Trump gave no explanation for the image. The State Department and the US embassies in Copenhagen and Reykjavik did not respond immediately. The BBC wrote that the post did not include a caption. The BBC also reported that Trump posted the map on Monday and that the entire landmass was labelled United States of America.[1], [2]

Frederiksen repeated that Greenland does not want to be American; Sheinbaum said Mexico is no colony

NBC News wrote that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the Greenlandic government and the Greenlandic people have said again and again that they do not want to be American. The BBC carried the same remark and added that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico is neither nor will be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country. Sheinbaum wrote that Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign nation.[1], [2]
