Yemen fighting displaces 46,000 as air strikes begin around Dhubab

The United Nations says renewed fighting in southwest Yemen displaced at least 46,000 people in one week, with some families on the West Coast and in Taiz fleeing for a second or third time. Yemen's internationally recognised government says it began air strikes against Houthi military equipment around Dhubab and warned civilians to avoid two main roads leading towards Mokha.

46,000 people displaced in one week

The International Organization for Migration says at least 46,000 people have been displaced since fighting resumed in southwest Yemen last week. Its director general, Amy Pope, said the number was rising by the hour. Some families in the West Coast and Taiz governorates are fleeing for a second or third time since the conflict began. According to the United Nations, people are leaving with very few possessions and again need shelter, food and health services.[1]

Flight from Taiz into neighbouring areas

Civilians leaving the Taiz districts of Maqbanah, Jabal Habashi and Al Ma'afer are moving towards Lahj, Aden and Ibb. The Red Sea port of Mokha is at the centre of the fighting. The World Health Organization recorded 67 deaths and 288 injuries across seven governorates between August 6 and 24. Only 60 per cent of Yemen's health facilities are fully functioning, widening the service gap facing newly displaced families.[1]

Air strikes around Dhubab

Yemen's internationally recognised government said its air force had begun striking Houthi military equipment around Dhubab in western Taiz. The army declared the area around Mokha and the eastward stretch of the Taiz-Mokha road closed. Armed forces spokesman Col Majed Al-Nuzaily warned civilians to avoid the Taiz-Mokha and Mokha-Dhubab roads. These are statements from the government side, and the effects of the strikes have not yet been independently verified.[2], [1]
