Locomotive struck near the frontier
Ukrainian Railways said a Russian drone hit the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train in the Volyn region on Sunday. The impact site was about 2 km from the Polish frontier. Railway staff moved to safety after receiving an advance warning, and both The Kyiv Independent and El Pais reported that no passengers were injured.[1], [2]
Other damage reported around the crossing
El Pais reported that the strike near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing set a petrol station on fire and damaged several trucks. The Kyiv Independent also reported damage to the station near Yahodyn. The incident therefore affected road transport and fuel infrastructure around the border in addition to striking an international passenger rail service. The reported damage is limited to findings shared by the two outlets.[1], [2]
Poland activates its defences
Poland activated its air-defence systems while the wider Russian attack was under way. According to El Pais, the Polish defence minister nevertheless said no violation of Polish airspace had been detected. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the strike as a blow at the door of the EU and NATO, a political characterization of its proximity to the frontier.[1], [2]
