Poland called near-border strikes an escalation; Tusk did not rule out his own territory

Poland and Ukraine denounced Russian strikes close to the Polish border, including a Warsaw-bound train hit about two kilometres from the frontier. Prime Minister Donald Tusk chaired an emergency meeting and said he could not rule out the escalation reaching Polish territory. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the strike showed an intent to sow fear and that support for Ukraine would increase.

A train two kilometres from Poland

Arab News reports Poland and Ukraine denounced Russian drone strikes close to the Polish border, including on a Warsaw-bound train hit two kilometres from the frontier, as an escalation of the war. Tusk chaired an emergency meeting in Warsaw and said he expected Russia to escalate in the coming weeks, adding that he could not rule out the escalation reaching Polish territory. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, speaking in Kyiv, said a strike a few hundred metres from the border affects the safety of Poles and that allies should double support for Ukraine.[2]

Rutte: more Ukraine support, tighter eastern defences

Al Jazeera reports NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in Brussels on Monday that Sunday's strike on a train in Ukraine close to the Polish border showed Putin's desperation and desire to sow fear. He said the answer is to increase support for Ukraine, that the 32-nation alliance would not be deterred from backing Kyiv, and that it would beef up its own defences along the eastern border with Russia. Poland would increase security along its border with Ukraine.[1]

Who was near Yahodyn

Arab News reports Ukraine's rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said a diplomatic train carrying security advisers from several EU states and former leaders including Boris Johnson, and another train carrying former CIA director David Petraeus, were at Yahodyn station around the time the locomotive was hit; no casualties were reported. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow struck the locomotive deliberately. Russia said it had hit railway infrastructure used to transport military cargo from European states. Al Jazeera's Rutte remarks do not themselves name those passengers.[2], [1]
