EU extends Rafah border and Palestinian police missions to June 2027
The EU Council extended its Rafah border mission and Palestinian police mission by nine months, through June 30, 2027. The two civilian operations have distinct jobs, one at the Gaza–Egypt crossing and the other mainly in the West Bank. The decision followed a strategic review and letters from the Palestinian Authority and Israel. It continues their mandates without announcing a new crossing arrangement.

Two civilian mandates were extended
The EU Council extended the mandates of EUBAM Rafah, its border assistance mission, and EUPOL COPPS, its police mission in the Palestinian territories, by nine months to June 30, 2027. The decision under the EU’s security and defence policy was announced on September 28. Europa Press also reported the extension of both missions in the same decision. A technical renewal in June had set September 30 as their expiry. This decision continues the existing mandates beyond that date without announcing a separate new crossing arrangement.[1], [2]
Rafah mission works at the Gaza–Egypt crossing
The Council said the decision followed a strategic review by the European External Action Service and separate letters from the Palestinian Authority and Israel. EUBAM Rafah advises and provides technical assistance to Palestinian personnel at the crossing between Gaza and Egypt. The EU launched the mission in 2005, suspended it in 2007 and redeployed it in January 2025 and February 2026. The Council said that redeployment had enabled more than 13,000 travellers to cross so far. That figure describes past passages, not a target set by the new extension.[1], [2]
Police mission focuses on the West Bank
EUPOL COPPS has a different assignment from the border mission. Launched in January 2006, it advises the Palestinian Civil Police and criminal justice institutions, mainly in the West Bank. Both the Council and Europa Press describe its role in supporting civilian policing and justice capacity. The two missions therefore continue under one renewal decision while working in different places and on different tasks. The Council identifies Rafah as the crossing between Gaza and Egypt and the West Bank as the police mission’s principal operating area.[1], [2]
