Bomb hits Kharkiv apartment building; mayor reports 22 injured

An aerial strike hit a multistorey apartment building in Ukraine’s Kharkiv early Monday. Mayor Ihor Terekhov later reported 22 people injured, including six children, and said two floors were destroyed. Earlier local officials had reported nine injured, five of them children. The figures came at different moments and remain official accounts; the apartment strike and civilian injuries are the fresh development.

Apartment block struck overnight

A strike hit a multistorey apartment building early Monday in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine. Mayor Ihor Terekhov identified the building as the impact site in accounts carried by both Al Jazeera and local publisher Харків Times. Regional administrator Oleh Syniehubov said the impact was on the second floor and damaged two floors. The local report also described strikes in another city district, but the apartment block is the event here.[1], [2]

Officials revise the injury count

The early Харків Times account reported nine people injured in the Saltivskyi district, five of them children. Al Jazeera later quoted Terekhov saying at least 22 people had been injured, including six children. The numbers belong to successive official updates, not independent measurements of casualties. The later count should be attributed to the mayor and not described as established by both publishers.[1], [2]

Kharkiv strike is separate from Sunday attacks

The Monday strike on this apartment building was separate from attacks reported in other regions on Sunday. The Sunday casualty figures cannot be added to the mayor’s injury count for the building. The accounts of this strike do not identify the munition’s launch site or a military unit. The two damaged floors and the later civilian injury total belong to the same apartment incident.[1]
