Goyal and Greer continue bilateral talks

Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer discussed a bilateral trade agreement at the G20 trade ministers’ gathering in Milwaukee. Officials from the two countries are continuing negotiations.[1], [2]

Goyal’s aim is an early conclusion to a mutually beneficial interim stage of the agreement.[1]

Greer described his conversation with Goyal as constructive but said a deal was not imminent. He said officials had identified the outstanding sticking points and were working to resolve them.[2]

Meeting follows a Modi–Trump call

The ministers’ meeting followed a telephone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Trump. Their discussion covered cooperation in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies. The trade officials met after Congress passed legislation authorising a new tariff tied to India’s purchases of Russian energy. Trump has not announced a final rate or scope under that authority.[1]

US trade investigations remain part of the backdrop

Washington continues investigations involving India and other economies under Section 301 of the US Trade Act. A 10 percent duty for India was determined in July under the forced-labour investigation. A separate investigation into excess production capacity has not concluded. The bilateral negotiations therefore continue alongside existing duties and another unresolved US trade inquiry.[1]
