Kyiv closes Southern Bridge after renewed Russian drone strikes
Kyiv closed its Southern Bridge in both directions on 2 October after renewed Russian drone attacks. Traffic and metro services had resumed following a structural assessment of the first strike on 1 October. Further attacks damaged a pier, the road and a protective barrier, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Restrictions on crossings left long queues of cars and buses across the capital.

Closure disrupts a main Dnipro crossing
Kyiv’s Southern Bridge closed to traffic in both directions on 2 October following Russian strikes. The closure disrupted transport in Ukraine’s capital, where the crossing is one of the main road links between the two sides of the Dnipro River.[1], [2]
Reopening is followed by further attacks
Russian drones first struck the bridge’s supporting structures on 1 October. Traffic was temporarily suspended while its structure was assessed. Road traffic and metro services resumed after that assessment, before the bridge was attacked again during the night and the following morning, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.[1]
Klitschko said the night strike damaged a bridge pier, the road surface and the concrete barrier protecting the metro line. The full consequences of the latest attack were not yet established.[1]
Restrictions leave cars and buses in long queues
Reporters in Kyiv observed long queues of stationary cars and buses on major roads. Klitschko said the Paton Bridge, farther north, remained open in only one direction. Earlier attacks on trains and petrol stations had already disrupted road and rail connections. Frequent air raid warnings have also sent civilians to shelters amid increasing drone and missile bombardment in recent months.[1]
