Presidents meet beside the business forum

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met in New Alamein, Egypt, on 3 October alongside the Alamein Africa Business Forum. They discussed trade, investment and broader economic cooperation as part of their bilateral relationship. The Somali presidency described the agenda in terms of economic development and investment. The business gathering brought together governments, companies and financial institutions, with African leaders holding bilateral meetings on commercial cooperation. No specific investment agreements or new projects were announced after the presidents’ meeting.[1], [2]

Cairo reiterates support for Somalia’s sovereignty

According to Egypt’s presidency, Sisi reaffirmed support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as well as political, security and development cooperation. The Egyptian account said Hassan Sheikh praised Cairo’s backing. Sisi also called for greater national consensus among Somalia’s political forces, without linking that appeal to a named dispute. These were the positions stated by the presidency during the encounter. The regional agenda included the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Aden, Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea. Those waterways form an international corridor connecting major trade routes. The presidency said the leaders agreed to continue consultation on regional issues.[1]

No maritime operation or specific security arrangement was announced after the talks. Egypt’s presidency said Hassan Sheikh was expected to take part in a four-way summit with Egypt, Eritrea and Sudan on Sunday. That engagement remained a planned meeting when the account was published.[1]

The January partnership supplies the economic framework

The encounter followed a strategic partnership announced in January 2025, covering political, military and economic cooperation. Areas identified for closer economic ties included agriculture, livestock, fisheries, construction, transport, banking and energy. Somalia is seeking investment and broader partnerships for economic development, while Egypt’s relations with it already span security, education, trade and development. The presidents used the business forum to discuss expanding that cooperation. The absence of project announcements leaves the commercial discussion at the level of the bilateral agenda rather than a newly disclosed investment package.[1], [2]
