Pashinyan and Pezeshkian renew talks in Turkmenistan

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met in Turkmenistan for their second encounter in two weeks. Both offices emphasised closer cooperation, and the Armenian side highlighted Iranian companies’ role in strategic projects. The meeting followed foreign-minister contacts amid Iranian concerns about third-party involvement in the Caucasus and a planned transit route.

Second encounter in two weeks

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met in Turkmenistan on October 9. Their encounter took place alongside the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the grouping of former Soviet republics. Both governments emphasised high-level contacts in developing relations between Armenia and Iran.[1], [2]

This was the leaders’ second meeting in two weeks. They had met on September 23 during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Pezeshkian’s office said the new discussion addressed expanding relations across all fields. The president stressed stable, lasting ties and said closer coordination could strengthen mutual trust and understanding.[1]

Strategic projects feature in Armenia’s account

Pashinyan’s office described a substantial cooperation agenda and highlighted Iranian companies’ participation in strategic projects in Armenia. It also conveyed the leaders’ expectations of closer relations and the importance they attached to forthcoming reciprocal high-level visits. Foreign ministers had spoken by telephone the previous day after Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan’s Monday visit to Tehran.[1]

Transit plans form the regional backdrop

The official Friday readouts did not explicitly mention TRIPP, the planned US-administered transit route for Azerbaijan along Armenia’s border with Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had raised concerns about third-party involvement in the Caucasus at his October 5 meeting with Mirzoyan. Mirzoyan told Armenia’s parliament on Wednesday that the process had been transparent.[1]
