Justice Department confirms a criminal investigation

Federal investigators searched the Washington home of Ilhan Omar, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives, on 12 October. Homeland Security Investigations, a criminal-investigation unit within the Department of Homeland Security, conducted the operation with Justice Department assistance. The department said agents executed a search warrant it had obtained as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.[1], [2]

CBS sources familiar with the case linked it to immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father during her childhood. Middle East Eye attributed a similar account to unnamed Fox News Digital sources. The Justice Department has not publicly set out the case’s details. Homeland Security Investigations handles offences including immigration document fraud, identity fraud and immigration benefit fraud, alongside executing federal warrants.[1], [2]

Omar denies wrongdoing and alleges intimidation

Omar’s office denied wrongdoing and described the search as an escalation in the use of federal law enforcement against political opponents. Omar said she was safe and would not be silenced. She accused Donald Trump of targeting her with baseless allegations for years. Officers were seen leaving the home with boxes and electronic devices, according to Middle East Eye.[1], [2]

Born in Somalia, Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee in 1995 and was elected to the House in 2018. Trump’s border official Tom Homan referred to a criminal investigation into her in September. She said then that nobody had contacted her about an investigation. The search took place less than a month before the midterm elections for the entire House and one-third of the Senate. Omar has been a US citizen for almost three decades. Trump previously called for an investigation into whether her citizenship was lawful.[1], [2]

Democratic lawmakers criticise the operation

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and party leaders Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar jointly criticised the search. They said it raised serious questions about federal power being used against Trump’s adversaries. Democratic representatives Ro Khanna, Greg Casar and Pramila Jayapal also condemned the operation. Khanna expressed concern about political opponents and Muslim Americans being targeted, while Jayapal accused Trump of repeatedly attacking Omar and Somali Americans.[1], [2]
