X suspends over 13,000 accounts ahead of US midterms

X says it has suspended more than 13,000 accounts in three suspected foreign influence networks ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections. The platform links the operations to Iran, Russia and China. Those state connections remain its allegations; it has not published detailed technical evidence or measured an electoral effect.

Three suspected networks lose their accounts

Social media platform X says it suspended more than 13,000 accounts in three suspected foreign influence networks ahead of the US midterm elections. The company links the networks to Iran, Russia and China. Those connections remain allegations made by X.[1], [2]

The total covers all three networks together. X did not give a separate account count for each country or publish detailed technical evidence establishing state links.[1]

X describes coordinated political activity

In Wednesday’s announcement, X’s Global Government Affairs team said the accounts published or amplified political material targeting US candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. The company says monitoring and investigations identified the accounts under its rules against coordinated inauthentic behaviour and spam networks. It did not publish a measurement of changes in voter behaviour.[1]

Election rules cover misleading voting information

The November 3 elections will determine control of Congress. X says its Civic Integrity policy addresses false information about when, where and how to vote, as well as attempts to discourage participation. Users can report misleading election material; Community Notes can add context and sources, and the platform can apply civic-integrity labels to posts.[1]
