Technical delegation is due in Abuja in November

An EU technical delegation is due to visit Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, in November to agree delivery arrangements for assistance to the armed forces. The planned talks concern support under the European Peace Facility, according to the statement from Defence Minister Christopher Musa’s office.[1], [2]

Musa met Gautier Mignot, the EU ambassador to Nigeria, at his Abuja office. Media aide Leah Katung-Babatunde announced the discussions on Saturday. Their agenda covered bilateral defence agreements, security cooperation and arrangements for implementing the assistance.[1]

Musa identifies continuing security problems

Musa said relative peace was gradually returning to Nigeria. He nevertheless identified kidnappings on major highways and attacks on isolated communities as persistent problems. The minister thanked the EU for its support and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.[1]

Lake Chad and conflict victims enter the talks

Defence Minister Musa described the shrinking Lake Chad Basin as a potential source of instability. He said denying armed groups bases on its islands remained a priority for the Multinational Joint Task Force, the regional security force operating around the lake. Musa also called for conflict victims, including affected military personnel, to receive greater attention in disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration programmes.[1]
