Three-day visit announced before departure
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu will visit Pakistan on October 20–22 at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation for bilateral talks.[1], [2]
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to make a state visit to Pakistan from October 20 to 22 at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation. The announcement came on Sunday, October 18, before the trip began. First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, cabinet ministers and senior officials are due to accompany him. Pakistan’s foreign ministry said the visit would be the first by a Maldivian president in eleven years. The programme brings the two governments together as they mark the sixtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations. Those relations began in July 1966. The announced visit includes both official political talks and meetings intended to expand economic contacts.[1]
Bilateral agenda extends from trade to maritime security
The announced programme includes restricted and delegation-level talks between Muizzu and Sharif. The leaders are expected to review bilateral relations and consider opportunities in trade and investment. Health, education, tourism and agriculture are also included, alongside defence, maritime security, climate change and contacts between people in the two countries. Regional and international developments of common interest are to be discussed as well. These are the areas listed for the meetings, rather than a set of newly adopted policies. The programme covers a review of existing cooperation and exploration of additional opportunities. Its breadth does not establish that either government has already agreed to a particular new measure.[1]
Business forum and signatures remain planned outcomes
A Pakistan–Maldives Business Forum is planned to bring the countries’ business communities together. Its stated purpose is to encourage direct contacts and explore possibilities for trade and investment. Agreements and memorandums of understanding covering several fields are expected to be signed during the visit. The announcement does not turn those expected signatures into completed agreements or investments. Pakistan and the Maldives also participate in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. The foreign ministry presented the planned visit as an expression of a shared commitment to strengthen their partnership. The concrete next step remains the October 20–22 programme of talks and business meetings.[1]
