The meeting took place on October 19

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel on October 19 and met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A senior US military official told CBS about the meeting, and a second person familiar with it in Israel confirmed it on Tuesday morning. Axios separately reported the encounter, citing two people with knowledge. The Pentagon declined to comment.[1], [2]

Hegseth posted a photograph of himself speaking to American service members and said he was in US Central Command’s area of responsibility. The post did not identify Israel or mention Netanyahu. CBS also sought a response from the Israeli government.[1]

Israel votes on October 27

The visit came just over a week before Israel’s planned parliamentary election on October 27. Netanyahu’s Likud-led coalition is seeking another term against challengers including a party led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot. President Donald Trump endorsed Netanyahu on Sunday.[1]

Iran operations form the military backdrop

Trump has raised the possibility of resuming military operations against Iran after the American midterm elections in November. Netanyahu told Israeli media last week that he did not plan renewed strikes before the October 27 vote. The US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran in late February. CBS gave no new operational decision or agreed attack timetable from the meeting.[1]
