UN experts seek an independent inquiry into India’s policing of protests

Independent UN human rights experts have urged an investigation into allegations of excessive force and arbitrary detention during protests in India. Their 20 October appeal seeks protection for peaceful assembly amid a dispute over electoral-roll revisions. It establishes the experts’ public demands, while the alleged abuses await independent investigation.

Experts call for an impartial investigation

Independent United Nations human rights experts called on 20 October for an impartial investigation into allegations of excessive force and arbitrary detention during protests in India. Their statement concerns demonstrations in New Delhi and other areas over the past three months. They urged authorities to protect peaceful assembly and ensure accountability for reported abuses.[1], [2]

Appeal addresses force and assembly restrictions

The experts cited reports of baton charges against unarmed students and attempts to stop people joining demonstrations. They also raised concerns about arbitrary detention, biometric surveillance and internet restrictions, calling for blanket assembly bans to be withdrawn. These are allegations and assessments in the experts’ appeal; an independent investigation has not established every reported episode.[1], [2]

Electoral-roll revisions drive the protests

Student groups and the Cockroach Janta Party, a protest movement in India, have been prominent in the demonstrations. Protesters argue that electoral-roll removals could deprive eligible citizens of the vote and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. India’s Election Commission says revisions aim to make voter lists accurate. The governing Bharatiya Janata Party denies political manipulation.[1]
