Federal officers make an arrest in Brandenburg

Germany’s federal prosecutor announced the arrest of Ukrainian national Vadym Y. on October 22 on suspicion of spying for Russia. Federal Criminal Police Office officers detained him in Brandenburg’s Oder-Spree district under a warrant issued on October 15. The inquiry concerns suspected intelligence activity for a foreign power. The arrest follows allegations about the collection of military information in Germany during Russia’s war against Ukraine.[1], [2]

Prosecutors allege contact through an intermediary

Prosecutors allege Vadym Y. had contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025. They say the material covered armoured-vehicle, ammunition and explosives production, along with personnel and military facilities supporting the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO. Some information was publicly available; other material was allegedly obtained by cultivating contacts in Europe’s defence industry.[1]

Judge to decide on pretrial detention

The investigation began after information from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency. Federal criminal police are conducting the inquiry. Prosecutors said Vadym Y. was due before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice on October 23. The judge was to present the warrant and decide on pretrial detention. The announcement of October 22 contains no hearing outcome. The allegations have not been proven in court.[1]
