Helsing unveils Contra air defence system for fast drones and cruise missiles

German defence company Helsing unveiled its Contra air defence system and a jet-powered interceptor in Berlin on 26 October. According to Helsing, the system combines sensor data with software that coordinates interceptions while human operators retain target decisions. The design addresses fast attack drones and cruise missiles, using ground guidance followed by an onboard radar seeker.

Contra brings sensors and interceptors together

German defence company Helsing presented Contra, its proposed air defence system, in Berlin on 26 October. The unveiling included the jet-powered AD-1 Inferno interceptor, designed to counter fast attack drones and cruise missiles. The company described a system that uses artificial intelligence to fuse data from different sensors and coordinate the vehicles engaging aerial targets.[1], [2]

Ground radar guides the initial approach

Ground radar stations provide guidance commands during the middle of the interceptor’s flight. The vehicle then switches to its own radar seeker, the onboard equipment that tracks a target, for the final approach. The design also allows it to patrol a designated area while waiting for targets, operate alongside other interceptors as a swarm and make repeated interception attempts.[1]

Operators retain target decisions

Altra, Helsing’s command-and-control platform at the centre of Contra, automates system operations while human operators retain control over decisions and target priorities. The interceptor is launched from a container. Standard trucks or rail can carry these containers to deployment locations. Helsing plans to manufacture the interceptors at its Resilience Factories, the company’s production facilities. The AD-1 is being developed as one component of the wider Contra air defence system.[1]
