Flavio Bolsonaro said he would lead Brazil’s opposition from the United States after arriving in Miami with his family on 28 October. Bolsonaro announces opposition plans from Florida

Flavio Bolsonaro said he would lead Brazil’s opposition from the United States after arriving in Miami, Florida, with his wife and two daughters on 28 October. He had lost Brazil’s presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In his post-arrival statement, Bolsonaro claimed he was the truly elected president and alleged election fraud without presenting evidence. He described the investigation against him as politically motivated.[1]

Arrival and route through Ecuador confirmed

Bolsonaro and his family landed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport and left by vehicle. Argentine immigration authorities said they had entered Argentina before boarding a private aircraft for Guayaquil, a city in Ecuador. The aircraft then continued to Miami with the family aboard. The arrival established their presence in the United States after earlier uncertainty over their onward route from Argentina.[1], [2]

A Brazilian investigation remains open

Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his ordinary and diplomatic passports while embezzlement and money-laundering allegations were investigated. He denies wrongdoing. Brazilian authorities subsequently cancelled his passports after the surrender deadline expired. US officials had announced entry visas for the family. No grant of political asylum was reported. The post-arrival statement about leading the opposition came after his departure despite the passport surrender order.[1], [2]
